Pet insurance, explained
Last updated September 13, 2026
Pet insurance pays part of the vet bill for accidents and illness after you pay the vet. Eva does not sell insurance. This page says how it works so you can decide before your dog needs it.
What it covers
Accident and illness plans cover diagnostics, surgery, hospital stays, and medication for new conditions. Wellness add-ons cover routine visits and vaccines. Conditions your dog had before the policy started are not covered, which is why people enroll puppies early.
What it costs
Monthly premiums depend on breed, age, and where you live. You choose a deductible, a reimbursement rate, and an annual limit. A higher deductible lowers the premium.
When it is worth it
It is most useful for breeds prone to expensive conditions and for households that would struggle with a surprise bill of several thousand dollars. If you can set aside the premium every month instead, a savings account can do the same job for a healthy dog.
The health guides in the Journal cover what to ask a vet before you choose a plan.
