# How to pick a name your dog will actually respond to

Two syllables, a hard consonant, and nothing that sounds like no.

The name is the most used cue you will ever teach. Pick one that is easy to say fast and easy for the dog to hear.

## Sound

Two syllables ending in a vowel carry well: Maple, Juno, Piper. Hard consonants at the start cut through noise. Avoid names that rhyme with cues, like Beau and no, or Kit and sit.

> **The nickname problem.** Pick the name you will say when it matters and use it for training. The dozen nicknames can come later, once the real one is solid.

## Teaching it

Say the name once, and the instant the puppy looks, pay. Ten times a day for a week. Never use the name for anything the puppy dislikes.

### Changing a rescue's name

Fine at any age. Pair the new name with the old for a week, then drop the old one. Dogs learn a new name in days when it predicts good things.
