# The puppy vaccine schedule, explained

What the core shots are, when they happen, and what your puppy can do in between.

The series runs from about eight to sixteen weeks. Knowing the shape of it makes the vet visits and the socialization window easier to plan.

## Core vaccines

Distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza come as a combination shot at roughly eight, twelve, and sixteen weeks. Rabies is given once at twelve to sixteen weeks, as state law requires.

> **Reactions.** Mild soreness and sleepiness for a day are normal. Facial swelling, vomiting, or trouble breathing within hours are not. Call the clinic.

## Non-core vaccines

Bordetella, leptospirosis, and Lyme depend on where you live and what the dog will do. Your vet will recommend based on daycare, hiking, and local wildlife.

### In between

Socialization matters most before sixteen weeks, so do not wait. Carry the puppy, visit vaccinated adult dogs you know, and avoid dog parks and pet store floors until the series is done.
